i have one more week of finals, then i'm getting ready to move to IRELAND!!!!

that's right. I'm going to a little art school in a village in ireland.

i intend to make a separate blog about that and my travels through europe afterwards.

christmas driving beatles memories

I must have been 4 or 5 when we were driving to my grandparents for Christmas in Missouri. It's a drive that should only take 6 hours. I remember everything about it so much better than any other memories of my childhood. I remember packing, my dad putting the suitcases in the car, waiting in the living room, gathering last minute things. My aunt from Mexcio was visiting and going with us. I don't remember BEING at my grandparents or Christmas, it just flashes to the drive home. It was night, there were snow flurries, and I was laying in the back of the van, all of a sudden the car was swerving off the road into a ditch. My aunt held on to my so tight. I think she was more scared than I was. We all sat in the car, I have no concept of time, but then a couple in a car with towels on their seats pulled over and took us girls to a Taco Bell a few miles down and went back to help my dad. We stayed in a motel that night. The next day we drove home, and I remember getting lost and going down all these twisty bump, hilly roads into woods and then turning around. I kept thinking about Johnny Apple Seed or whatever he's called thinking about whoever planted all the trees in the mountains on the side of the highway and how old they are and what it looked like before the highways were there.

I've made that drive countless times since then and they are never as eventful or memorable as that one.

One thing that brings the memories back are specific Beatles songs, I remember listening to You Know My Name, From Me To You and others. We listened to them over and over.

I love that my dad has such good music taste and introduced them to me at such a young age.

So try to be true, even if it's only in your hazey way.

There was a new song that he sang that night, that he kept starting and stopping, never completing; he finally just sang the opening lines over and over again: ‘Do you curse where you came from/Do you swear in the night?’ (Hazey Jane I). ‘It was chilling and morbidly fascinating. No one took their eyes off him for a second - there was a real sense of keeping him there with our gaze and attention, that if we looked away, however briefly, he might disappear, or forget that we were there and go to sleep.’

45 is so young. 30, way too young. Thankfully Jeff did alot in his 30 years that we can still appreciate and love today. I hope I never run out of bootlegs or unreleased recordings.

I wish I had seen this video before I took my etching class, I have a lot more respect for the process after seeing his work~

I first heard of Campbell when he tattooed Heath Ledger.

He tattooed Heath's castmates from The Imaginirium of Dr. Parnassus with the heart Heath drew on a letter to the directors daughter, Holly Gilliam.

He also helped Ledger's plans for Five Leaves, a restuarant in Greenpoint, manifest in the Fall of 08. I had the chance to eat there a few times in 2009! Definitely my favorite restaurant.

He's had fine art exhibits, attracting everyone from tattooed kids to big name celebrities.

His art can be found on the bodies of Sting, Robert, Downey, Jr., Courtney Love, Orlando Bloom, Josh Hartnett, and Marc Jacobs.

after bleaching my hair, i've had to spend lots of money each month to keep being a blonde.. that means i'm over due for some shopping. most of the clothes i have managed to buy are black because of work. black, dress or skirt, and heels. i'm pretty sure i own more black outfits than a funeral director. i want color! it's time for a wardrobe cleanse and investing in some nice pieces. i'm still longing for a really nice pair of bellbottoms. and drapey dresses. with lots of patterns and different textures.

i think my next purchase will finally be ........LITAs!! i'm so behind but finally i will own them.

i thought about getting a more classic kind, but in the end i know these cosmic ones best match my personality. i can't wait to walk around in them. i wish i lived in a bigger city where it was a little more socially excepted to be unique haha. i think ill get a lot of looks with these~

The kind of people whose songs you've covered from Leonard Cohen to Alex Chilton to Nina Simone are people who have a very fragile muse to them. They are people whose personalities have often been destroyed by their art.

I think that fragility isn't quite as accurate as sympathy, which takes a huge pain threshold. Some people are just born into bodies, born into lifespans that just don't fit anywhere else and they have very little to hang onto to validate and also it's a very lonely thing to notice a certain sense of life and be able to relate that to anyone. It's probably the onset of madness, or it must seem so to the person who has it at the time, who sees the world in a certain way and it usually has a lot of real meaning. Maybe they see spirits everywhere or maybe they divine information from certain happenings and certain peoples that are invisible to most of us, and as a result people deem those experiences not valid and not important, and crazy too, and that can damage a person. Those characters you named have a lot of strength to them even though...There's a lot of strength to the self-destructive soul. Not that it's wise to be self-destructive, but it is wise.

Val Kilmer had to convince Oliver Stone for the part, he made his own 8 min. tape of him acting as Jim. He evenrecorded songs and asked Stone to pick out which was Jim and which was Val and Oliver Stone couldn't tell! He performs 15 songs in the movie.

To prepare he lost weight, went to Doors tribute concerts, read Jim's poetry, hung out around Sunset Strip, rehearsed Doors songs for 6 months, and wore Morrison like clothes for almost a year. he also spent alot of time talking to Paul Rothchild who was The Doors producer, he told Kilmer, "anecdotes, stories, tragic moments, humorous moments, how Jim thought, what were my interpretation of Jim's lyrics and helped withsome pronunciations, idiomatic things that Jim would do that made the song sound like Jim".

The real remaing Doors; Robby Krieger and John Densmore talked to him but Ray Manzarek refused...

Oliver Stone originally wanted Paula Abdul to choreograph the concert scenes... but she didn't "understand" Morrison's onstage actions (hahhah)

I can remember the first time I heard Jeff's cover of The Way Young Lovers Do. There's many different versions, and they're all different and good. But the first one I heard is my favorite. My dad put it on my ipod and I was falling asleep with it on shuffle and it came on, and I don't know if you know what I'm talking about, but I was in this weird state where I thought I was asleep but my mind was paying 1000% attention to the music and it just sounded so good! Like being high or something. I can't find that version right now and my ipod is long gone.

If I were introducing someone to Jeff Buckley it would be with this song. It really shows what a creative and beautiful vocalist he is.

One of my favorite songs ever. I first heard it in 2007. I had it on a mix CD in my car on repeat for so much of my senior year in highschool that listening to it takes me right back and I remember everything going on at the time... Many songs have that effect but this one is easily in my top 5 most loved songs. The guitar, the flute, and the voice. I just love it! I don't even really know any other MTB songs except Heard It In A Love Song and Bob Away My Blues. I actually found this album on vinyl last fall and got a record player for chirstmas so I can listen to more. I guess I am a southern rock fan!

I admire and adore Michelle Williams. I love reading her interviews and she always makes literary references to poets and writers that I love. I have alot of respect for her and how she has had to deal with loss in such a publicized way, and does respectable work and often off-beat roles. Last month I saw an interview she did with Nightline, she was describing how she felt when she was filming a scene for Brokeback Mountain and said, ‎"water, water. I want to be like water, strong enough to hold up a ship but able to slip through your fingers". I just love that line...

She goes on to talk about Heath .... and in this interview with Kevin Sessumus she talks about how "re-contextualized" they made that interview and it makes her want to close up even more.

I always felt that I had a tendency to eventually become schizophrenic. Because I just felt so nervous all the time. I had all these nervous habits, and I almost had like a compulsive disorder of thing I would do; popping my knuckles, itching my face, and flipping my hair. I'd just traded off the habits I had. It was a mixture of like hating people so much because they just didn't live up to my expectations and just being so fed up with being around the same kind of idiot all the time. I mean, everyone was just a carbon copy of one-another that it was obvious in my face and how I reacted towards people, that I couldn't stand them you know, I had this personal vendetta against them because they were so macho and manly and stupid.

I started to be aware of this, that people were noticing that I had this hatred towards alot of people and it was this general consensus with everyone that knew me that I couldn't stand them or I was really edgy all the time. And so I just started feeling neurotic, like paranoid in a way because they knew I was going to freak out any time.

I was sought as this kid who would most likely succeed to bring an AK47 to the school and blow everyone away.

I wanted to fit in somewhere, but not with the average kid, the popular kid at school. I wanted to fit in with the geeks but the geeks were sub-geeks in Aberdeen. They weren't the kind of geeks who listened to Devo, they were just usually deformed.

What's your idea of perfect happiness?

Just being comfortable with yourself. I think that anyone who's unhappy is probably not very comfortable with themselves. That's why most people find contentment in middle age. They don't worry anymore about image or how people see them. I have phobias, really bad anxiety problems. I have to take medication whenever I'm going to be in large groups of people. I can sing in front of 50,000 people but as soon as I'm among them I freak out. I'm really claustrophobic as well. I've been caught in six lifts in my life. One time I was in there for 3 hours by myself and it was totally dark and I was just sitting in the corner pressing the alarm button. I was freaking out and sweating. And then I heard this tapping on the roof, and it was like, Thank fuck, about fucking time!

You spend a lot of time barefoot. Why?

It's more natural, it's a good feeling. If I'm just hanging out with friends and wandering around I don't wear shoes at all but if I'm going to a club I will.

What was the last book you read?

'Everything In This Book Is A Lie But It's Exactly How Things Are'. It's pretty spiritual book about links to aliens and it's really amazing, full of great theories. And I bought a book today about government conspiracies which has a chapter on why they won't legalise cannabis. It's because the cotton industry pays them not to.

What's your favourite film?

'Leaving Las Vegas' is really moving. I like the darkness, it's a really unorthodox way of presenting the film. I like dark things to have an undercurrent of sarcasm and irony, so it's great.

What was the last dream you had?

I was running through a field and all of these people were throwing knives at each other and I was trying to escape and fell into a huge pit. All the blood from the people started flowing into the pit and I was drowning. It was fucking scary. It's possibly linked to my anxiety attacks. I think everything in the subconscious part of the brain has links to things like phobias.

If you could travel back in time where would you go?

I'd go back to Egypt, really fucking early to find out if there were aliens there. I wish there'd been a hidden camera when they built the pyramids because they're just too precise to have been built by men at that time.

Why are you a vegetarian?

I'm actually a vegan, although I love the smell of chicken. When I was 16 I because a vegetarian and six months later I did the full thing and became a vegan. It's not as hard as you'd think 'cos I have simple tastes, just fruit and vegetable and cereal. I take protein tablets to keep me healthy so I very rarely get sick. I don't drink alcohol either because of a stomach ulcer, but I'm definitely not straight-edge. I mean, I'll take certain stimulants if you know what I mean, when I'm at parties but nothing too out of control. A lot of people get drugs and drug addicts mixed up. I'm not hugely into drugs, but it's good to experiment now and again.

It's a big surprise to me that theatre is my first love. I didn't know that when I was young. I loved theatre, but, as technology explodes more and more, I'm learning to love it even more.

There's a beautiful Milan Kundera quote in his new book where he talks about the birth of a new art form called cinema. It was completely usurped by big business. Basically, now, it's big business. It's not cinema as art. What qualifies as an art picture is not what qualifies as literary fiction — and what a shame that is.

As people start watching "The Godfather" on an iPhone on the subway, the theatre becomes more and more relevant, and you realize that this ancient art form is going to survive all of this. It's funny, with rock music, music is cheaper and cheaper…but a live Bruce Springsteen concert is still priceless. A great work of theatre is priceless. It can't be repeated.

There's a great Meryl Streep quote I heard recently. When she was younger and really into theatre, they were saying, "Movies are immortal." Now that she's older, she realizes, "God, all the movies are dated." The only thing that's immortal is her production of The Cherry Orchard 33 years ago. The people who saw it love it and remember it. That hasn't dated, whereas even "Silkwood" is dated. Theatre lives. When I meet somebody who says to me, "I saw you in Jack's Henry IV," the first thing that comes to my mind is "What night?" They say, "Oh, Christmas," and I say, "Was my voice hurting?" "Yeah, your voice was really ragged." "I know. I was having such trouble." It hasn't aged a day. That's the beauty of theatre. You can't buy it on your iPod. You can't download it on iTunes. That makes it more special now.

I've never been a fan of country music... but Kris Kristofferson is becoming my favorite songwriter. I love Jeff, Jim and Bob, but Kris Kristofferson's songs are always so simple but carry so much meaning. They tell stories without being too specific. And even though he doesn't have the greatest voice, the songs are so good it doesn't even matter.

He got a Creative Writing degree in 1958 from Pomona College, then went to Oxford to get his Master's in English Literature. A long time later Pomona gave him an honorary doctorate. And in between all that he flew helicopters in the army, became best friends with Johnny Cash, dated Janis Joplin, got married a few times, had 8 kids, was in a bunch of movies (Cisco Pike-obviously, Billy the Kid, A Star is Born...) and is still writing and performing!! And he is turning 75 this June!!!

Although formed in Davis, California, Kak were based in San Francisco for a good part of 1968, when they recorded their only album. Lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Gary Lee Yoder and lead guitarist Dehner Patten had been in the Oxford Circle, an obscure early Northern Californian psychedelic band that had cut one garage/psych single ("Foolish Woman"/"Mind Destruction") and played some shows on the San Francisco psychedelic circuit, while bassist Joe-Dave Damrell had been on a 1965 single on Scorpio Records with Group "B".

The self-titled Kak LP was minor-league San Francisco psychedelic rock colored by a lot of influence from bigger Bay Area bands, particularly Moby Grape; the vocal harmonies and curling guitar work on tracks like 'Disbelievin'" and "Everything's Changing" in particular sounded like a more pedestrian Moby Grape. There were also more distant echoes of Quicksilver Messenger Service (in the guitar work) and the Grateful Dead (in faint traces of country-blues-rock). Kak were best, and least derivative, at their quietest, as on the gentle country-tinged rocker "I've Got Time, " the good-time wistful psych-folk-rock of "Lemonade Kid, " and the harpsichord-decorated ballad "Flowing By, " which was as derivative of Donovan as much of their other songs were of Moby Grape.

Kak's album was barely promoted and sold little. It didn't help that the band played less than a dozen shows before breaking up in early 1969, Damrell having already quit prior to the split. Yoder did a single for Epic and and then joined Blue Cheer. The Kak album eventually became a pricey collector item, and was reissued on CD by Big Beat (with the new title Kak-ola) in 1999 with plenty of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased acoustic demos and Yoder solo tracks from the late sixties. - Richie Unterberger

The hardest thing was trying to find a wig and hoping it would be the right color. And I ordered contacts that I didn't even end up wearing because they were so difficult! No one knew who I was Halloween night... One person said "Lindsay Lohan??" But oh well I had fun!

Echo, described as the Minnesotan Brigitte Bardot, was Dylan’s first serious girlfriend. She lost her virginity to Bob, who claimed that it was his “first time” as well (though she later found out he had, in fact, lost his virginity to a very close friend of Echo’s just a few weeks earlier). They broke up after graduating from high school.

A beautiful brunette whom he dated in college; is supposedly the inspiration for the song “The Girl From The North Country”, although Bob also told Echo the song was for her. She is now married to 60’s hipster “Wavy Gravy”, Hugh Romney. She now goes by the name Jaharana Romney.

Bob and Suze met in the summer of 1961, when they were both living in New York. Suze and Bob first met at Gerde’s Folk City in the Village. Rotolo was 17, and the daughter of a liberal, cultured family. They would date from 1961-1964, with Suze being the muse for some of his most famous songs, including “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and “Boots of Spanish Leather”. In 1963, Suze learned she was pregnent with Bob’s child, but instead of keeping the baby, she decided to have an abortion. In early 1964, Suze left for Italy to attend a summer course at the University of Perugia. While she was away, Dylan would have restless nights where he wept over missing Suze so bad. Musician Dave Van Ronk remembers that on many occassions, he would get a phone call at absurd hours of the night, with Dylan in tears on the other line. Upon her return, the two restarted their relationship though Dylan had just begun seeing Joan Baez as well. They appeared as a loving couple on the cover of Freewheelin’ but theings were falling apart. Dylan had become too controlling. Due to this as well as Suze’s disaproving family (the fall-out between Dylan and Suze’s older sister Carla is well-known) and Bob’s emerging relationship with Baez, their relationship was coming to an end. Soon, Rotolo opted to live her own life. During the mid-70’s Dylan tried to contact her but she decided not to see him. She lives happily with her film editor husband in New York City, and, although their split was bitter, she still has very fond memories of Dylan and the time they shared together.

Joan and Bob first met in 1961, in a Cambridge folk club. He was actually first attracted to her younger sister Mimi, and Joan was not impressed by him. But they re-met in 1963 and then Joan decided it would be a good idea to bring Bob on tours with her, so he would get the attention he deserved for writing all the songs she and other folk acts had begun singing and recording. Joan secretly had a crush on Bob ever since they had met, and even before they started dating, Joan told Mimi they were in love. “I remember, I was living in Paris at the time, and Joanie would send me all the latest American records. She sent me Bobby’s Freewheelin album and she pinned a note on the cover of it that said ‘my new boyfriend.’ I was really surprised because when we first met, Bobby barely even talked to Joanie.”

It was when they first toured together that their affair began. Friends said that sometimes you would walk by a dressing room, and see Joan and Bob slow dancing to a pop song on the radio. Or they would always be sitting together, with Bob’s head laying on her shoulder, and Joan stroking his hair. Also, a friend of theirs remembers one time in Woodstock, Bob and Joan were sitting together, talking about getting married, and what they would name their children (they had the name Shannon in mind). But in 1965, Joan started to notice a change in Bob. He ignored her out in public, and when he did speak to her, it was only to yell at and humiliate her. One time, when they were out at dinner with Mimi and her husband Richard Farina (who would soon beproducing one of Joan’s albums), Bob started making fun of Joan, about her appearance. Joan began to cry and went outside. Richard got up and ran to comfort her, while Mimi dealed with Bob who was laughing. She grabbed his hair and bent his head over the back of the chair. She screamed in his face “Don’t you ever make her cry again! Don’t you ever treat Joanie like that again, you here me?!!” Bob began to cry and was nearly choking. She let go of him, and went outside to see Joan still crying in Richard’s arms. “What a gerk.” Farina said.
Even after all this, Joan still went with Bob on his 1965 tour of England, but half way through she came back to America because Bob and his friends were treating her so badly. Baez realized it was truley over when once when she came to visit Dylan at his home in Woodstock, Sara Lowndes answered the door. They began a new friendship in the 1970s when she joined him on the Rolling Thunder tour, with Bob even living with her for a short time. Even if it was a case of two egos clashing, they influenced each other greatly at key points in their lives.

The British blues singer first met Dylan on his 1965 English tour when she was 16. They saw each other whenever he came to England and built an enduring friendship. In 1998, Dylan rang asking her to support him on tour. When asked why, he replied “Because you’re a great songwriter and you’ve always been nice.” To Gillespie, Dylan will always be the perfect gentleman. “He’s amusing, he’s spiritual. As for the promiscuity, at least he’s honest. Women prefer to be seduced by a brain than bullock. Brains go a helluva long way.”

When Jim wrote, he wrote from a universal standpoint. That is, he dealt with themes that are universal, and they are timeless. He dealt with love, death, sex, breaking away from one's family, mysticism, breaking on through to the other side. To see a new reality, he talked about rebellion and revolution. Those are things that are a lot different than "Sixteen Candles", boy meets girl, boy loses girl. Not only were his themes meaningful, but the way he addressed those themes, the way he treated them. He read deeply into philosophy, and psychology. He was a very learned and well-read person and he was able to talk about those things in a way that people responded then, and still respond to. I think people who listen to him are attracted now both by his physical image, his voice, and also the things he wrote and talked about because those subjects are always meaningful to people.
